The 5 Strangest Things Sold At Our Perth Auction House

8th Aug 2017

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen in a store? If you spend a bit of time in Op Shops or antique stores you may have come across some weird and wonderful things but we’re pretty confident we can top those stories.

The chances of finding a full-size aeroplane or a V12 Lamborghini in the corner of an old curiosity shop seem slim – read on to find out the 5 strangest things we have recently sold at auction.

  1. A working skydive plane for auction

When a fleet of GippsAero GA-8 Airvan landed in our Perth auction stock back in 2013 we were flying high with excitement to find them a new home. There are less than 250 of these planes in circulation in Australia, most of them being used as charter planes or by skydive companies.

Through an online auction campaign Gregsons cleared 5 Airvans from 2009 and 2010, each with less than 2,000 hours flying time. Aircraft sales aren’t too common for us, so seeing 5 machines sold via our Perth auction house on a wing and a prayer definitely gave Gregsons some lift!

  1. A 360° CKAS Driving Simulator

We like to think we’re pretty good drivers here at Gregsons, so when a Major Bank needed us to assist in offloading a full 6DOF wraparound driving simulator, we were blown away by the realism of the technology.

These $400,000 machines look a little bit like a mini spaceship, with simulations inside for domestic vehicles, commercial drivers, and heavy vehicle operators. We’d heard of flight training simulators but the driver training version was something else!

Star Wars is one of the most ubiquitous franchises in history. People all over the world pay high prices for genuine, hard to find pieces of pop culture – our resident Star Wars enthusiasts told us we must include the Star Wars figurines that came our way in an online auction catalogue. The special ‘sneak preview’ edition Clone Trooper and Zam Wesell figurines were quickly snapped up and sent to a galaxy far, far away.

  1. Two supercars

We like cars. A lot. You can imagine the excitement when a crisp white Lamborghini Murcielago and sleek black Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT rolled in to our Perth auction yard. The V12 Lambo was sitting pretty on 18” alloys and the 4.2L V8 Maserati sported a paddle shift auto transmission with full leather interior and sunroof.

Both cars sold in November 2015 to very happy motorists. We were thrilled to see the new owners drive away smiling, but at the same time very sad to see the cars leave our lot

  1. 300 TONNE all-terrain crane

Where does one go shopping for a new crane? Gregsons Perth auctions, that’s where! The Grove GMK3000L 300-ton all terrain crane is popular with inner-city developers and mining operators alike because it is strong, rugged, and mobile. It was no surprise when this high quality piece of equipment was snapped up at our Perth auction.

From aircraft sales to action figures, we have seen some crazy things go on the block in our Perth and online auctions. It’s not surprising given we have been a part of WA’s auction landscape for almost a century, but we still get a kick out of seeing unique lots go up for auction. These are just some of the strangest things we have seen recently – keep an eye on our catalogues, who knows what you could find!
